What is the IoT and how is it used in medical devices?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept based on the networking of devices with others in their vicinity. The aim is to allow these devices to communicate and interoperate with each other, making them smarter and more independent. When this concept is applied to the healthcare sector, it is called the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) or healthcare IoT.

 Advantages of IoMT devices

The Internet of Medical Things is a technological ecosystem of medical applications that connect to healthcare IT systems through online computer networks. Suitably enabled medical devices allow machine-to-machine communication, which is the basis of the IoMT.

According to the latest reports by the global research and consultancy organization Frost & Sullivan, the IoMT market is expected to see an annual growth of 26% until 2021, a prediction that confirms the huge potential of the Internet of Medical Things.

7 features of an IoMT device:

  • Connection to cloud platforms allowing data to be easily stored and downloaded
  • Analysis of captured data
  • Information exchange with other devices
  • Remote patient monitoring
  • Tracking of patient medication orders and the location of these patients
  • Doctor-patient connection to improve user experience
  • Cost reductions in the medium and long term

At Kiversal, we search for new knowledge and technology in order to develop innovative solutions that allow the monitoring, diagnosis and treatment of chronic illnesses such as hearing impairment or other auditory function deficits.

This is why we created our first hearing screening device with internet connectivity, which also simplifies data capture and uploading to healthcare IT systems.

Our digital audiometer is an example of an IoMT device, as it fulfils the features described above. It also comes with a patient and appointment management system that can be accessed both locally and remotely, in addition to a new simplified calibration system that eliminates downtime. This device can be accessed remotely to monitor actual use, which facilitates its interconnection with external systems and devices.
